2025 recap and what’s ahead

XSCAVE launched strongly in January with the project kick-off, the establishment of the advisory expert group, and the appointment of the ethics expert. Partners reconvened in September in Tampere to review progress, with all work packages progressing on schedule and three major deliverables completed by the end of November. Scientific output has also been high, increasing the project’s visibility.

Technical progress

Across the consortium, significant advancements were made in data collection, simulation, hardware integration, and human-in-the-loop control.

Work included developing operation management tools to integrate multimodal human interventions, building and refining robotic and excavator simulators, creating detailed 3D machine models, advancing hydraulic module development, and conducting extensive sensor installation, calibration, and field data gathering.

These efforts collectively strengthened the foundations for scalable system integration and real-world demonstration.

2026 Outlook

The next year will continue to advance research across all work packages, supported by coordinated partner meetings and the 1.5-year reporting to the European Commission.
With strong collaboration and steady technical progress, XSCAVE is well on track for an impactful second project year. More updates will follow as results unfold.
